3 tips for making kratom tea
There are many ways to enjoy kratom tea. Everyone can find the method that suits them best. How you make it depends on what form of kratom you have available – crushed leaves, powder or even extract. Each way affects the taste, consistency and effects of the tea.
1. Using crushed kratom leaves
Prepare the crushed kratom leaves. You now have the most important thing. All you need then is hot water (30–60 °C) and something to help you strain the tea, such as a fine strainer, gauze or a reusable tea bag. Pour the recommended amount of 3–5 g of kratom into a sachet or directly into a container.
You have two options for making kratom tea: steeping or simmering. If you decide to steep, pour hot water at no more than 60 °C on the kratom to avoid destroying valuable alkaloids, and let it stand for 15–20 minutes. This method is gentle and will maintain kratom’s full efficacy. For simmering, the same procedure applies, but the water temperature must not exceed 60 °C.
When making the tea, be sure to choose the right kind of kratom according to the desired effects: red kratom for pain relief or sleep promotion, white kratom if you need a dose of energy or green kratom to induce a good mood.

2. Using kratom powder
Kratom powder is one of the most common forms and its preparation is very simple. On the Internet, a lot of retailers recommend pouring boiling water over the powder, but we recommend 30–60 °C water instead. This temperature is more gentle on the alkaloids and ensures stronger and fuller effects of kratom.
Tip 3–5 g of powder into a cup, pour warm water on it and mix well. Allow the mixture to stand for a maximum of one minute. Because the powder never completely dissolves, we recommend straining the tea through a fine sieve to ensure it has a smooth consistency.
Boiling kratom is not recommended, as high temperatures can reduce the efficacy of the alkaloids and cause the mixture to acquire the unsightly consistency of mud, making it difficult to consume. If you follow this gentle procedure, you will enjoy a drink that retains all the effective alkaloids.
3. Making iced tea
If you are looking for a refreshing option, you can make kratom ice tea. Follow the same procedure as for making warm tea, either from leaves or powder, and let the finished drink cool. Then add ice, lemon slices and mint leaves. This method is ideal for hot days and brings a new dimension to traditional kratom tea.
What about the typical bitterness? You can alleviate it by adding lemon and honey. In addition, lemon promotes the effect of alkaloids, while honey adds a pleasant sweetness and softens the taste. Other methods include:
- Stevia,
- coconut or cane sugar;
- maple or chicory syrup;
- milk or plant-based alternatives;
- different spices (e.g. cinnamon).

Ways to enjoy kratom
The right combinations can not only alleviate kratom’s natural bitterness, but also add a whole new dimension to the taste and promote stronger effects. Here are some tips to enrich the tea:
Fruit juice and smoothies
Grapefruit is the ideal choice to give kratom tea freshness, while strengthening its effects. It contains substances that naturally increase kratom’s efficacy. Just add a couple of slices of grapefruit or squeeze some fresh juice directly into the tea. Do you like a more marked taste? Try combining grapefruit with a piece of fresh ginger for a subtle spiciness. If you prefer sweeter options, adding kratom to a fruit smoothie will suppress its bitterness while creating a tasty drink.

Kratom specialist and owner of the Kratomuj.com e-shop Ondřej Tanistra says:
“When making tea, never use boiling water. It can reduce kratom’s efficacy. Follow the recommended dosage – kratom is a powerful herb and its effects can vary from one person to another. If you’re making tea, don’t boil the powder, as high temperatures can destroy valuable alkaloids and create an unappealing consistency.”
Practical variants – tablets and capsules
